Radio Commercials
“CAN YOU HEAR ME?”
Radio has been one of the longest-running broadcast technologies since May 13th 1897, when Guglielmo Marconi sent the world’s first radio message across open water.
Over the past 12 decades the way we listen to “radio” has gone from staying by the wireless to carrying the world’s best sounds in the palm of your hand.
Understanding who the audience is and how they are absorbing your message is vital when it comes to creating a memorable radio commercial to get your message into the ears of listeners.
Lockwood Homes
A series of radio commercials were produced over several years to support national and local campaigns. These supported other online and broadcast TV messaging to allow for specific regional communications to remain on brand when heard through out New Zealand.
Kitchen Things
An intensive series of monthly radio commercials were produced to represent the focus or featured in-store brand. These followed the same template to align with other media such as print and TV, along with all in-store collateral and ticketing. National and regional ads were produced to launch the advertising cycle, remind listeners and bring attention to the end-of-sale time frames.
Smeg Appliance NZ
Smeg New Zealand has a range of styles to suit most kitchen designs. Their four key signature looks were showcased in a TVC series featuring each of the Classic, Retro, Victoria and Linea series. This radio commercial ran in conjunction with the national campaign
Broken Silence
Information sourced from Museum of the History of Science – University of Oxford.
Marconi began his research on radio waves while at home in Bologna, inspired by the possibilities he saw in the work of early pioneers such as Heinrich Hertz, Augusto Righi and Oliver Lodge. He brought his vision and his enthusiasm to England in 1896, in search of support and commercial application, and in the same year applied for a patent for a system of wireless telegraphy.
Titanic distress message received onshore
“Before Marconi, you had to use telegraph wires to contact people but with radio you could contact ships instantly,” said Dave Dyer, chairman of the Weston-super-Mare Radio Society.
“Take the Titanic for instance, which sent a distress call out, it saved so many lives at sea.”
During the ship’s sinking, wireless operator Jack Phillips sent out a ‘CQD’ message to ships nearby – a precursor to the ‘SOS’ signal now used.
Mr Philips, a Marconi Company employee, went down with the ship as he continued to broadcast and died in the disaster.
Britain’s Postmaster General, then Herbert Samuel, said: “Those who have been saved, have been saved through one man, Mr Marconi…and his marvellous invention.”
Television Commercial Production
Television Commercial Production
The traditional television commercial has come a long way since the very first TVC took to the airwaves on July 1st 1941. From that grainy static image of a Bulova watch to the staggering $51.9 million dollar production for Chanel, the past eight decades have seen many changes.
Although the core concepts of brand and product messaging awareness have remained the same, the channels and touchpoints where an audience can see your “advert” has exploded.
We can help you strategise, plan and produce your television commercial for a range of distribution points such as broadcast linear TV, online, streaming, pre-roll, social and various internet-based platforms.

Event Planning & Design
A good event is not just about the individual elements that meet in perfect harmony all at the right time. It is when they are combined in such a way that they cause a memory to be formed and a moment to be created.
Hosting any kind of event, big or small, can be quite daunting. But it can actually be the simple things that transform one moment in time into an occasion to remember.
We have worked on all kinds of events. From weddings, conferences, dinners, awards, launches and entertainment productions. Whatever event you are planning for the future, we have probably been there before.
Property Council New Zealand Awards Event
For over a decade I had the responsibility of conceptualising, designing and coordinating the look and feel of the largest awards ceremony in New Zealand. The Property Council New Zealand Awards night grew throughout the years to eventually only being able to be hosted at Spark Arena due to the number of attendees; over 1300 in one year alone.
The services included the conceptual theme, graphics, animations, slideshows, script writing, technical cue sheets, pre-recorded footage, photography, interviews with winners and dignitaries, and audio soundscape design.
On the night we worked with an events technical and performance team of over 40 crew all having to seamlessly work in unison. Not bad considering each event only had one technical run-through the night before due to venue access.
New Zealand's Largest Indoor Screen.
Making use of the space was key when it came to the unique challenges posed by using New Zealand’s largest indoor screen. Stretching a mammoth 30 Metres wide the integration of a connected image took months of careful planning to bring a cohesive presentation to life. Another great trick with the design was that the streetscape and skyline depictive across the base of the screen slowly came to life as day turned into the night throughout the awards evening; including office lights and twinkling stars. It even finished off the night by displaying virtual fireworks when the supreme winner was announced.
New Zealand Marketing Association Annual Awards
The New Zealand Marketing Association Annual Awards 2008 were the first of their kind to take a theatre-in-the-round approach meaning that there was no bad table at the back of the room. With Careful planning, we were able to produce the appropriate glamour and prestige these premium awards deserved.

A great master of ceremonies possesses several key skills that set them apart from their peers. Firstly, they must be organised and able to manage their time effectively, ensuring the event runs smoothly and on schedule. A good MC is also personable and able to engage with the audience, getting them involved in the proceedings and creating a sense of excitement and energy. They should possess excellent public speaking skills, allowing them to hold the attention of everyone attending the event. Finally, a great MC must be adaptable and able to think on their feet, responding quickly and effectively to any unexpected events or issues that arise during the proceedings. The benefits of having a skilled MC at your event are significant – they can provide a professional touch that elevates it above similar events, creating a memorable experience for attendees.
They also serve as an important link between presenters and audience members, ensuring everyone stays informed about what’s happening next while maintaining a high level of engagement throughout the proceedings. “Quality over quantity – Emails may be cost-effective but it’s no excuse not to produce quality content to give to a targeted audience.” – Benjamin Murray
Email marketing and communications (EDM) can be a powerful way to stay in touch with your loyal audience. But getting your message seen in a noisy inbox is not as simple as it seems.
An effective EDM only works when you do the work. This is about speaking, listening and responding to the data that your recipients can provide you. A catchy subject line, great content and good database management can be hard to put your stamp on…well your mark at least.

Transforming Ideas into Visual Excellence
Adjacent Communications offers a comprehensive range of graphic design services, driven by a philosophy that aims to captivate audiences, convey messages effectively, and create visually stunning experiences. Our collective of talented designers combine artistic expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of human perception to craft designs that leave a lasting impact. Through the interplay of various design techniques, Adjacent Communications ensures that every element within a composition harmoniously works together to deliver a cohesive and visually pleasing result.
Philosophy Behind Graphic Design:
At the core of Adjacent Communications’ graphic design philosophy is the recognition that visual communication is a powerful tool to engage and influence audiences. Their designs are driven by a deep understanding of human perception, aiming to evoke emotions, convey information, and leave a lasting impression. By integrating design principles and techniques, they create visually compelling compositions that effectively communicate the intended message.
Perception of Graphic Design:
As humans, our primary sense of sight plays a crucial role in how we perceive and interpret graphic design. Design elements such as colour, shape, line, texture, and typography are carefully selected and arranged to elicit specific responses from viewers. Adjacent Communications leverages this understanding, utilising design techniques that engage the senses, guide the eye, and create a cohesive visual experience.
Composition and Balance:
Effective graphic design relies on the harmonious arrangement of design elements within a composition. Symmetrical and asymmetrical balance are key principles used by Adjacent Communications to achieve visual equilibrium. Symmetrical balance creates a sense of stability and formality, while asymmetrical balance introduces energy and dynamism. Through strategic placement of elements, their designs achieve a balanced and visually pleasing effect.
Adjacent Communications recognises the importance of effectively dividing space within a composition. Through the use of grids, whitespace, and visual hierarchy, we help establish clear zones that guide the viewer’s eye and provide structure. Proper division of space allows for a logical flow of information and ensures that the design elements work together harmoniously.
Focal Point and Emphasis:
Creating a focal point within a design is crucial to directing the viewer’s attention and conveying the main message. Adjacent Communications employs various techniques, such as contrasting colours, scale, and visual hierarchy, to establish a focal point and emphasise key elements. By guiding the viewer’s gaze, they ensure that the intended message is communicated effectively and leaves a lasting impact.
Unifying a Composition:
To achieve a cohesive design, Adjacent Communications emphasises the importance of grouping, harmony, and alignment. Grouping related elements together creates visual unity and enhances the overall impact of the design. Through the use of consistent colour schemes, typography, and visual styles, they establish harmony and coherence. Additionally, the precise alignment of elements ensures a professional and polished appearance.
Creating Contrast:
Creating areas of contrast is a vital aspect of graphic design. Adjacent Communications skillfully employs contrast to draw attention, create visual interest, and highlight important elements. Contrast can be achieved through variations in colour, size, shape, texture, or typography. By judiciously incorporating contrast, their designs achieve a dynamic and engaging visual experience.
