Why the name Adjacent?

The term “Adjacent” is defined in various dictionaries as meaning alongside, next to, meeting in a collaborative space, or being close or joined by a common touchpoint. These definitions perfectly encapsulated the essence of the company I envisioned creating. Also, the word “Adjacent” starts with the initials A, D, and J, which happen to be my own initials – Andrew David Johnson. What could be more ‘on brand’ than that?

I vividly remember the night of June 1st, 2000, when I drew the schematic diagrams and accompanying notes for the entire business network that I dreamed one day I could set out to create. 

Those sketches, which I still have in their original form today, illustrated the ADJ Network (which will be fully operational in early 2024.) They described the communication landscape of today with incredible accuracy and prediction of what was to come to be. At the heart of this network lies Adjacent Communications, a space where ideation, creation, and business converge.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of encountering numerous experiences and people who have helped shape my thinking and abilities. While I cannot thank everyone by name, there is one person who stands out.

On a rainy day in January 2021, while in Raglan, New Zealand, I received the encouragement I needed to take the leap of faith and finally start the business I had always dreamed of creating. 

My partner was the one who urged me to seize the moment and pursue my passion. He jumped up, got his credit card, and said, “We are buying the URL and confirming a company name now. Not tomorrow, today.” We came up with the name Adjacent and agreed that it was the perfect name for my company. Without his unwavering support, collaboration, and guidance, and simply being ‘alongside me’,  Adjacent Communications would not be where it is today.

I am grateful for the opportunity to expand on my professional experiences and development along the pathways I have chosen. I am excited to see what the future holds for Adjacent Communications and the ADJ Network.
